India America 2+2 dailougue on July 6th |External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will engage in talks

The defence and external affairs ministers of India will be holding talks with their American counterparts in the inaugural US-India 2+2 dialogue. It is scheduled to take place on July 6 in the US capital Washington D.C, as announced by both the countries on Thursday.
External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will engage in talks with the US secretary of state Michael R. Pompeo and Secretary of defence James Mattis. The main focus of the ministers will be to strengthen the strategic, security and defence cooperation between the world’s first and world’s largest democracies. India and US will also look for solutions to confront global challenge jointly.

The 2+2 dialogue format had been agreed upon the US visit of the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi in June, 2017. Both the sides are expected to share their views on a range of bilateral, regional and international issues.

The meeting has come at a time when there have been certain divergences between the two nations owing to the trade tariffs imposed by the US president Donald Trump with India levying its own taxes on any imports of specific products from the United States.

The US has also been trying to persuade India to bring down its defence cooperation with one of the archrival of the US- Russia. Although the trump administration has assured the Indian interlocutors that they won't suffer from the anti-Russia third party sanction by the US but it is still not clear how this can be achieved. It is expected to be discussed during the dialogues between the top ministers.

The purchase of Guardian Avenger armed drones from the united states is also dependent on this dialogue as both the countries are exchanging notes on an India-specific agreement. However, India has found the text of the agreement too intrusive.
